Not long ago, the Navstar Global Positioning System (GPS) was limited to military use only. Then, a little over a decade ago, it was opened up for civilian use and quickly became popular for aviation and boating use. With technology constantly improving, handheld GPS receivers were introduced and prices dropped, making it popular for personal uses like backpacking. Then, manufacturers like Garmin and TomTom began producing GPS receivers capable of displaying maps of ever-increasing detail. Display technology improved and soon color displays large enough to be easily viewed from an automobile were available. Today, some auto manufacturers (such as Honda, BMW, and Mercedes) are including GPS receivers in their cars as standard or optional equipment.
Given the plethora of GPS devices on the market today, it is easy to become overwhelmed by the sheer number of choices. This web site is designed to help you sort through all of the available technologies to decide what best suits your needs.
